Tides at the fjord

Why the water keeps running away.

Anyone who has ever wondered how the tides work usually also asks questions like: What is the longest place name in the world?

Both are the moments when geography teachers start to stammer nervously.

"Tides? Something to do with the moon."

For those who never wanted to know—and for the few diehards who are secretly interested: The moon pulls on the water. The Earth resists. The result: the sea has two hills. Practically ideal for water skiing.

More details in this video here:

By the way, the longest place name is “Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu.”

(A hill in New Zealand. Have fun programming your navigation system.)
